Site One: Western Sierra of California

Buried Time began with a simple act. I buried raw canvas in the forest floor near my studio in the Western Sierra and left it there for a year. Mineral stains, root impressions, weather, insects, and time transformed their surfaces. They carried images: tree forms, waterways, horizon lines. The forest had painted. That experience is shifting the questions driving my practice. If a landscape can generate an image, where does authorship begin? Is time a medium? The works on view here come from that first site, where Buried Time began. The years-long project is now expanding to ecologically distinct locations across California, where each landscape is given the same opportunity to shape a painting over time. I invite you to follow the project as artists, land stewards, and the land itself contribute to what unfolds.
